American Psychiatric Association

Founded as the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane, changed its name to American Medico-Psychological Association in 1892 and assumed current name in 1921. Incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1927. APA's mission is to advocate the highest quality care for individuals with mental disorders (including mental retardation and substance-related disorders) and their families; to assist psychiatric education and research and to advance and represent the profession of psychiatry. Membership: $105 (Member in Training, US); $65 (Member in Training, Canada); $145-575 (General Member depending on Year in Practice after Residency); $350-575 (Fellow & Distinguished); $115-380 (Life-Satus).
